Visiting the Winter Colony at Indianapolis
By A. E. Leatherman
THE large and spacious barns at the Indiana State Fair Grounds, Indianapolis, are filled to capacity. Both aged record material and young stuff just getting their first lessons are among the lot that provide the daily program that is keeping the large number of trainers busy at this beautiful plant. The village blacksmith, Clarence Cole, and his assistants also come in for a share of the excitement that is programmed each day, as here is where the future prospects are discussed.
In all probability Sep Palin has the largest stable on the grounds, these being in charge of his assistants, and among the record horses are Winnipeg 1:573/4, Labrador 2:001/2, Princess Iroquois 2:02, Red Pluto 2:051/4, Riley 2:003/4, Saint Guy 2:121/4, Peter Poem 2:041/4, The Senatress, by The Senator, The Virginia Senator 2:071/4, Celia B 2:121/4, and Contender 2:051/4, joint champion of his age and sex. The remainder in the Palin barn consist of four two-year-old colts by The Senator, and one two-year-old pacer by Abbedale 2:011/4.
At the present time "Sep" has 18 head at Orlando, Fla. These he is looking after himself, and in the lot are eight that are nominated in the Hambletonian Stake N o. 5, being f rom the loins of some of the most fashionably bred stallions in the country. His two-year-olds there are Lusty Volo, brc, by Peter Volo; Sanator Madden, bc, by The Senator; St. Charles, chc, by Guy Axworthy; Betty Ann, chf, by The Senator; Controller, bc, by Guy Axworthy; Calumet Aberdeen, bc, by Peter the Brewer; Calumet Albert, blc, by justice Brooke; Sun Cloud, bc, by McGregor the Great. The others that are getting southern training are Senator Silk, bc, by Guy Axworthy; Call Signal, bc, by Signal Peter; Worthy Mac, bf, by McGregor the Great Petroguy, bc, by Guy Axworthy; Calumet Guy, bc, by Guy Axworthy; Todd Worthy, be, by Guy Axworthy; Tony Worthy, brc, by Worthy McKinney, and two fillies by Signal Peter. The remaining one is the pacing mare, Miss Frisco June.
Clate Dagler has a stable of promising colts ranging in age from yearlings to two and threeyearold material. His choice one is Hilda Guy (2), by Arion Guy, an exceptionally fine-looking filly owned by Win. Buechley of Pottsville, Pa. Just Prudence, chf, 2, by The SenatorThe Great Northern Lady, and Esther Volo, brf, 2, by Peter Volo, are two nice ones. His candidate for the Fox Pacing stake is the bay filly, So Big, by Abbedale. Another promising two-year-old pacer is jean K. Direct, by Braden Direct. His only aged pupil is Plucky Pluto 2:141/4, by Peter Pluto, and he expects great things from this fellow this year. His other material consists of yearlings by The Great Volo, Braden Direct, The Senator and Axworth. These are getting their first lessons and when you consider that they are from the best bred families in the country results should follow.
Clair Wolverton is another of the trainers located at the track that is well supplied with young stock. He has six head that are owned by P. C. Isaacs of Somerset, Pa. His Fox Stake candidate for this gentleman is Old Glory, by Braden Direct. He also has her full sister, Yours Truly, that is promising. Ben Adam (4) 2:151/4, by Axworth; Fireworth (3) 2:20, by Axworth; Quick Quaker, bc, 1, by Peter Lincoln, are others, but one that is expected to be a sensation is the yearling Palomita, by Braden Direct, out of La Paloma. For J. C. Crouch of Lafayette, Ind., he has William Axworthy (4) 2:151/4, by William, and David Guy Axworthy 2:20, by David Guy. Both of these fellows have as their dam Pearl Axworthy. Another one of Wolverton's patrons is A. F. Williams of Corning, N. Y., who owns Pink Lady (2), by Bogalusa-Pearl Axworthy. For O. A. Jose of Indianapolis he has three head, all by Peter Lincoln. The best one of the lot is Josedale (3), whose dam is by Lee Axworthy. Wolverton regards him a great prospect. The fast record pacer Jay C. W. 2:061/2, by Benson Patchen, is also getting his winter's prep from the Hoosier trainer. This fellow has been one of the most consistent pacers in the middle west. He is owned by Chas. Wattle of South Bend, Ind.
